Olivet Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) was established in St. Paul, Minnesota, in January, 1888. The church's present home, nestled in St. Paul's historic Merriam Park neighborhood, is a charming English Cottage-style building surrounding a garden courtyard. It was designed by noted architect Clarence Johnston in 1907. A growing congregation of worshipers from different denominations and backgrounds, Olivet is known for warmth of friendship and mutual support, the beauty of its worship and music, its love for its children, and its strong sense of community outreach. Newcomers are welcome to attend Sunday worship at 10:00 a.m. weekly and experience the Olivet community firsthand. Olivet's Mission Statement: "The Triune God who brought Israel out of Egypt, and who raised Jesus Christ from the dead, is our “Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend. Olivet Congregational Church is a community in Jesus Christ dedicated to the service of God. Enlivened and guided by the Holy Spirit, we seek to grow in faith, fellowship, and service."
The United Church of Christ, to which Olivet belongs, was founded as a "uniting church" in 1957. It carries forward traditional Christian emphases on education, responsibility for the social order, and a warm-hearted piety. We understand the great creeds of the Christian tradition as confessions of faith of the whole church, not as tests of a person's Christian loyalty. In joining one's voice with the church saying, "I believe," one states the content of faith into which one is growing daily, and with which one is trying to make sense of one's life and the world.
Programs of the church include Sunday worship, Christian education for children, youth and adults, pastoral care and counseling, service on church committees and councils, adult choir, and participation in a wide variety of community outreach projects, both locally, nationally and internationally. Whether singing in the sanctuary, building Habitat for Humanity houses, or stocking St. Paul's food shelves, Olivet members give ongoing witness to God's transformative presence in their lives.
